About this list
This is the list of 63 professions eligible for TN status, from Appendix 2 to Annex 16-A of USMCA Chapter 16, as reproduced in 8 CFR 214.6(c). Requirements are quoted as written. Professions marked TNPath packet are supported by TNPath’s builder today.
Meeting a profession’s minimum credential is the starting point, not a guarantee of admission. The job must also be in that profession at a professional level, for a U.S. employer, for a temporary period.

Notes from the list
- A business person seeking temporary employment under this list may also perform training functions relating to the profession, including conducting seminars.
- “State/provincial license” and “state/provincial/federal license” mean any document issued by a state, provincial, or federal government, or under its authority, but not by a local government, that permits a person to engage in a regulated activity or profession.
- “Post-Secondary Diploma” means a credential issued, on completion of two or more years of post-secondary education, by an accredited academic institution in Canada or the United States.
- “Post-Secondary Certificate” means a certificate issued, on completion of two or more years of post-secondary education at an academic institution, by the federal government of Mexico or a state government in Mexico, an academic institution recognized by the federal government or a state government, or an academic institution created by federal or state law.
- “Mathematician” includes the profession of Actuary. An Actuary must satisfy the necessary requirements to be recognized as an actuary by a professional actuarial association or society operating in the territory of at least one of the Parties.
- A Scientific Technician/Technologist must be seeking temporary entry for work in direct support of professionals in agricultural sciences, astronomy, biology, chemistry, engineering, forestry, geology, geophysics, meteorology or physics.
- A Medical Laboratory Technologist/Medical Technologist must be seeking temporary entry to perform in a laboratory chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic or bacteriological tests and analyses for diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases.
- “Biologist” includes the profession of Plant Pathologist.

Common questions
Is software developer a TN profession?
Software developer isn’t on the list. Computer Systems Analyst is, but USCIS guidance (June 2025) treats programming and software-development roles as outside it.
Is there a TN category for project managers or sales roles?
No. Only the professions on the list qualify. Some roles overlap with listed professions, but the job itself has to be in the listed profession.
What counts as a post-secondary diploma?
The list defines it as a credential issued on completion of two or more years of post-secondary education by an accredited academic institution in Canada or the United States.
Will TNPath tell me whether I qualify?
No. TNPath is a document-assembly tool. It organizes the facts you provide into templates and gives general information. It doesn’t make eligibility determinations or recommend case-specific strategy. Only U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether to admit you.
