TN visa sample letter for an engineer

An annotated, fictional sample of the employer support letter for a Canadian engineer, with what each part does and the mistakes that draw questions.

Last updated: October 2026For Canadian citizensGeneral information, not legal advice

Short answer

A TN support letter for an engineer is written by the U.S. employer and should cover the TN profession, the job’s professional activities, the length of stay, your credentials and your pay. For this category, the duties should read as professional engineering work. USCIS guidance (June 2025) looks for an engineering degree directly related to the position. Source: 8 CFR 214.6(d)(3), USCIS Policy Manual.

What an engineer letter must contain

No government form exists for the letter. Under 8 CFR 214.6(d)(3)(ii), the documentation for a Canadian applicant should describe the profession, the professional activities with a summary of daily duties, the anticipated length of stay, the applicant’s educational qualifications or credentials, and the arrangements for pay. For Engineer, three details deserve extra care:

  • The list entry, quoted exactly: “Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree; or state/provincial license.”
  • The credential route you actually use. Either a degree, or a state/provincial licence. The list treats the licence as an alternative to the degree, not an extra requirement stacked on top of it. This sample shows the degree route, so the qualifications paragraph names the degree, its field, the school, the country and the year.
  • Duties that describe professional engineering. Design, analysis, calculations and applying engineering principles read as the profession. Installation, maintenance, drafting and routine testing read as technician or technologist work. The degree and the duties should also sit in the same engineering discipline, described concretely.

Re: Request for TN classification for Noah William Example, citizen of Canada

Profession: Engineer (USMCA, Chapter 16, Annex 16-A, Appendix 2)

Position: Mechanical Engineer

Requested period: Three years, February 1, 2027 through January 31, 2030

Dear Officer:

Example Manufacturing Inc. (the “Company”) respectfully requests that Noah William Example, a citizen of Canada, be admitted to the United States in TN status under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to work for the Company as an Engineer in the full-time position of Mechanical Engineer.

About the Company. Example Manufacturing Inc. designs and manufactures industrial pumping equipment for commercial and industrial customers across North America. The Company is located at 400 Sample Drive, Suite 150, Houston, TX 77002.

The position. As Mechanical Engineer, Mr. Example will perform professional mechanical engineering work, reporting to the Company’s Engineering Manager. The position is based in Houston, TX. Mr. Example’s principal duties will include:

  • Design engineering systems and prepare engineering plans and specifications.
  • Perform engineering calculations, modeling and analysis.
  • Review technical drawings for compliance with codes and standards.
  • Investigate failures and recommend engineering solutions.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, regulations and safety standards.
  • Prepare technical reports documenting engineering findings.
  • Evaluate materials and methods for engineering suitability.

The TN list of professions (Appendix 2 to Annex 16-A of the USMCA, set out in 8 CFR 214.6(c)) states the minimum requirement for Engineer as: “Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree; or state/provincial license.”

Mr. Example’s qualifications. Mr. Example holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering (Example University, Canada, 2016).

Length of stay. This is a temporary position. The Company anticipates requiring Mr. Example’s services for a period of three (3) years, beginning on or about February 1, 2027 and ending on January 31, 2030.

Remuneration. Mr. Example will be employed full-time, working 40 hours per week, at an annual base salary of US$105,000, paid through the Company’s U.S. payroll. Mr. Example will also be eligible for the Company’s standard employee benefits.

We respectfully request that Mr. Example be admitted in TN status as an Engineer for the period stated above. Please contact me at [email protected] if you require any further information.

Sincerely,

Morgan Sample

Engineering Manager

Example Manufacturing Inc.

What each numbered part is doing

  1. The Re: block names the applicant, “citizen of Canada”, the TN profession exactly as it appears on the list (“Engineer”), the job title and the requested dates.
  2. The request connects the employer, the applicant, the TN profession and the position in one sentence.
  3. About the Company says what the employer does, in its own words, and where it is.
  4. The position and duties carry the case. Every duty describes professional engineering work: design, calculations, modelling and analysis, compliance review, failure investigation, technical reports and evaluating materials and methods. None of them is installation, maintenance or repair work.
  5. The minimum requirement quotes the list entry word for word, including the licence alternative.
  6. Qualifications state the credential the applicant actually holds — the degree, its field, the school, the country and the year — matching the documents they bring.
  7. Length of stay says the job is temporary and gives dates, up to three years.
  8. Remuneration states pay, hours and the U.S. payroll.

This sample was generated by the same engine that builds TNPath letters, from fictional answers. The degree route is shown. On the licence route, the qualifications paragraph names the state/provincial licence instead.

Common engineer letter mistakes

  • Technician or technologist duties. Installation, maintenance, drafting and routine testing read as technician or technologist work, not professional engineering. If the real job is hands-on work of that kind, consider an independent review by a U.S. immigration lawyer.
  • A degree and duties in different disciplines. Officers look for discipline alignment, and USCIS guidance (June 2025) looks for an engineering degree directly related to the position, described concretely.
  • A title that points elsewhere. A Software Engineer title alone doesn’t place a job in this category: USCIS guidance says computer roles without a genuine engineering foundation are a harder fit. Keep the real title, and make sure the duties honestly describe what you do.
  • A technology diploma presented on the degree route. The Engineer entry names a degree or a licence. The TN list has a separate Scientific Technician/Technologist category with different rules; which category, if any, fits a job is a classification question TNPath doesn’t decide.
  • No dates or pay. A letter without a period of stay or pay arrangements leaves out elements the regulation describes, and officers focus on a clearly temporary stay with defined dates.

Never add or inflate duties to fit a category. Every line should be something your employer will confirm and you can describe in your own words at the border.

Common questions

Is there an official TN support letter for engineers?

No. There’s no government form. The regulation, 8 CFR 214.6(d)(3), describes what the employer’s letter should cover, and the sample on this page is one way to lay it out.

Do I need a P.Eng. or PE licence on top of my degree?

No. The list treats the licence as an alternative to the degree, not an additional requirement. Some states regulate certain engineering work or titles separately, which is worth checking for your situation.

My diploma is in engineering technology, not engineering. Can I use this sample letter?

The Engineer entry names a degree or a licence. The TN list has a separate Scientific Technician/Technologist category with different rules; which category, if any, fits a job is a classification question TNPath doesn’t decide.

Who signs the letter?

Someone at the U.S. employer with authority who knows the role, such as the hiring manager or an HR representative, on company letterhead.

Will TNPath tell me whether I qualify?

No. TNPath is a document-assembly tool. It organizes the facts you provide into templates and gives general information. It doesn’t make eligibility determinations or recommend case-specific strategy. Only U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether to admit you.
