TN visa for Canadian foresters: a guide

TNPath’s Forester flow covers professional forest management work — management plans, stand inventories and stewardship advice — not logging, firefighting or general labour. This guide covers the Forester entry, the degree-or-licence route, duties wording and documents for your TN visa packet; it does not decide the category for your case.

The category in brief

Your packet should document the professional work offered by the U.S. employer, the credential route in this list entry, and the requested temporary stay. Bring facts that agree across the signed letter and your supporting documents.

Keep the description on professional forest management work — not logging, firefighting or general labour.

What the TN list requires

Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree; or state/provincial license.

TN profession list, Appendix 2 to Annex 16-A of USMCA Chapter 16 (8 CFR 214.6(c))

The “or” matters: the quoted routes are alternatives, not a demand to hold every credential. Present the credential you actually hold — a degree or a licence — and copy its name exactly from your records. Do not add an alternative the entry does not name.

What to explain at the counter

  1. Describe professional-level forestry work using the employer’s real responsibilities.
  2. State the temporary period requested, up to three years, with actual start and end dates.
  3. Keep the letter, résumé, offer details and interview answers consistent.
  4. Keep the description on professional forest management work — plans, inventories, prescriptions and stewardship — not logging, firefighting or general labour.

TNPath doesn't assess whether your evidence is sufficient; that's the officer's call

If the role or credential route is unclear, consider speaking with a U.S. immigration lawyer.

Describe the actual duties

These occupational examples are prompts drawn from the BLS description, not facts about your job. Use only responsibilities your employer confirms; write them in the employer’s own terms.

  • Prepare forest management plans covering timber production, wildlife habitat, water quality and recreation for forest land
  • Conduct timber cruising and stand examinations to inventory forest stands and estimate timber volume
  • Develop silvicultural prescriptions, including planting, thinning and harvest methods, for assigned forest areas
  • Plan reforestation and tree planting programs after harvest and monitor regeneration and seedling survival
  • Assess forest health, including insect, disease and invasive species damage, and recommend treatment programs
  • Collect and analyze field data on soils, water, wildlife habitat and forest conditions using forest inventory methods
  • Plan and oversee timber sale preparation, including stand selection, sale layout and contract specifications
  • Evaluate the environmental effects of forestry operations and recommend practices that protect soil and water resources
  • Prepare technical reports, maps and recommendations on forest management activities for landowners and agencies
  • Advise private landowners and public agencies on forest management, conservation and stewardship practices

Never add, inflate or reword duties to fit a category. Every line in the letter should be something your employer will confirm and you can describe in your own words at the counter.

Job titles that draw questions

Titles such as Logger, Arborist, Tree Surgeon, Firefighter, Forest Technician, Forestry Technician, Landscaper can describe support work or another occupation. Keep the real title and describe the responsibilities honestly. TNPath’s wording flags are prompts for review, not USCIS category rulings.

Your employer must verify, approve and sign the final letter

Documents to bring

  • Canadian passport
  • Signed employer letter on company letterhead, original and copy
  • Résumé matching the letter
  • Offer letter, if any
  • Means of paying the applicable CBP fee
  • Evidence of the credential route quoted above — your degree certificate and transcripts, or your licence record — using the exact names on your records

Common questions

Can I use a licence instead of a degree?

The list entry uses “or”: it names a Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree, or a state/provincial licence. Present the credential you actually hold, using the exact name on your records. TNPath does not assess which route applies to a specific case — if the route is unclear, consider an independent review by a U.S. immigration lawyer.

What work does the Forester category cover in general terms?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the occupation this way: “Conservation scientists and foresters manage the land quality of forests, parks, rangelands, and other natural resources.” Among other duties, it lists: “Establish plans for managing forest lands and resources.” Officers check that the applicant will perform the duties associated with the listed profession, so describe only the work your employer confirms.

How should forest work be described in the employer letter?

Describe professional forest management work in the employer’s own terms: management plans, stand examinations, silvicultural prescriptions, reforestation planning and stewardship advice. Logging, firefighting, chainsaw work and general labour are different kinds of work, so describe the actual role accurately. TNPath does not decide whether a particular job fits the category.

As a Canadian, do I need a TN visa before I go to the border?

Generally, no. Canadian citizens are visa-exempt and apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry or airport preclearance, with their documents in hand. The officer decides at the counter. People still search for "TN visa", but for Canadians it's a status granted at entry, not a visa stamp. One exception: if you live outside Canada and will enter with a spouse or children who are not Canadian citizens, the State Department says you need a TN visa so they can apply for TD visas.

Will TNPath tell me whether I qualify?

No. TNPath is a document-assembly tool. It organizes the facts you provide into templates and gives general information. It doesn't make eligibility determinations or recommend case-specific strategy. Only U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether to admit you.
