The category in brief
Your packet should document the professional work offered by the U.S. employer, the credential route in this list entry, and the requested temporary stay. Bring facts that agree across the signed letter and your supporting documents.
Keep the description on professional library work — not shelving, circulation-desk or clerical support.

What the TN list requires
M.L.S. or B.L.S. (for which another Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree was a prerequisite).
TN profession list, Appendix 2 to Annex 16-A of USMCA Chapter 16 (8 CFR 214.6(c))
The entry names two library degrees, the M.L.S. and the B.L.S., and its parenthetical refers to another Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree as a prerequisite. TNPath quotes the entry as written and doesn’t assess how it applies to your records. For general background, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes entry to the field this way: “Students need a bachelor’s degree in any major to enter MLS or similar programs,” and “Librarians typically need a master’s degree in library science (MLS).” Copy your credentials exactly from the documents you actually hold; do not add an alternative the entry does not name. If how the wording applies to your records is unclear, consider an independent review by a U.S. immigration lawyer.
What to explain at the counter
- Describe professional-level library work using the employer’s real responsibilities.
- State the temporary period requested, up to three years, with actual start and end dates.
- Keep the letter, résumé, offer details and interview answers consistent.
- Keep the description on professional library work — collections, cataloguing, reference and instruction — not shelving, circulation-desk or clerical support.
TNPath doesn't assess whether your evidence is sufficient; that's the officer's call
If the role or credential route is unclear, consider speaking with a U.S. immigration lawyer.
Describe the actual duties
These occupational examples are prompts drawn from the BLS description, not facts about your job. Use only responsibilities your employer confirms; write them in the employer’s own terms.
- Develop and manage library collections, selecting books, journals and digital resources for acquisition
- Catalog and classify library materials using standard classification systems and metadata standards
- Provide research and reference services to patrons, answering complex research questions and locating sources
- Design and deliver information literacy instruction for students, faculty and other library users
- Plan and manage library programs and services for the community the library serves
- Evaluate and recommend library technology systems, including catalog and discovery platforms
- Manage the library's digital collections and institutional repository, including metadata and access
- Develop library policies and procedures for collections, access and services
- Develop collection policies and assess collections against curriculum, research and community needs
- Prepare reports and analyses on library usage, collections and services for administration
Never add, inflate or reword duties to fit a category. Every line in the letter should be something your employer will confirm and you can describe in your own words at the counter.
Job titles that draw questions
Titles such as Library Technician, Library Assistant, Library Clerk, Library Aide, Shelving Assistant, Library Page can describe support work or another occupation. Keep the real title and describe the responsibilities honestly. TNPath’s wording flags are prompts for review, not USCIS category rulings.
Your employer must verify, approve and sign the final letter

Common questions
What does the prerequisite wording in the Librarian entry mean?
The entry reads: “M.L.S. or B.L.S. (for which another Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree was a prerequisite).” Its parenthetical refers to another Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree as a prerequisite. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes: “Students need a bachelor’s degree in any major to enter MLS or similar programs.” TNPath does not assess how the wording applies to a specific case — if you are unsure, consider an independent review by a U.S. immigration lawyer.
I hold a B.L.S. but no earlier bachelor's degree. What should I do?
The entry reads: “M.L.S. or B.L.S. (for which another Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree was a prerequisite).” TNPath doesn’t assess how that wording applies to your records and does not make eligibility determinations. Present your credentials exactly as they appear on your documents, and consider an independent review by a U.S. immigration lawyer.
What work does the Librarian category cover in general terms?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the occupation this way: “Librarians and library media specialists help people find information and conduct research for personal and professional use.” It also notes: “Librarians typically need a master’s degree in library science (MLS).” Officers check that the applicant will perform the duties associated with the listed profession, so describe only the work your employer confirms.
As a Canadian, do I need a TN visa before I go to the border?
Generally, no. Canadian citizens are visa-exempt and apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry or airport preclearance, with their documents in hand. The officer decides at the counter. People still search for "TN visa", but for Canadians it's a status granted at entry, not a visa stamp. One exception: if you live outside Canada and will enter with a spouse or children who are not Canadian citizens, the State Department says you need a TN visa so they can apply for TD visas.
Will TNPath tell me whether I qualify?
No. TNPath is a document-assembly tool. It organizes the facts you provide into templates and gives general information. It doesn't make eligibility determinations or recommend case-specific strategy. Only U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether to admit you.
